Steroid affects on the immune system
By: Emeritus Professor of Medicine and Senior Endocrinologist

 Ref: Q3- NO.33 August 1997

Q: What can I do to help myself as I have been told that the "steroids" are affecting my immune system and as a result I have a permanently inflamed throat which is painful at times.

A: "Steroids" such as hydrocortisone or prednisolone only have effects on the immune system when they are taken in doses which result in blood levels higher than those that would be normally seen in healthy person without Addison's Disease. Simple replacement therapy with hydrocortisone does not, if the dose is adjusted properly, ever result in suppression of the immune system. Thus it would not account for a permanently inflamed throat.
