Managing Addison's disease leaflet

By:  Katherine White  Thursday, 23. March 2006

This leaflet, Managing Addison's disease, has been developed for the ADSHG by our Clinical Advisory Panel, led by Professor John Wass. It provides a summary of the key points everyone with Addison's needs to know to manage their health.

The leaflet was designed primarily to assist those recently diagnosed and is ideal for hospitals and endocrinology units to give to their Addison's patients.  It is two A4 sides long and covers:

1. What is Addison's disease?

2. How is Addison's disease diagnosed?

3. How is Addison's disease treated?

4. What do I need to know about managing my medication?

5. Are there any special precautions I will need to take?

6. What could go wrong if I don't take enough medication?

7. What kind of medical support and monitoring will I need?

8. What kind of quality of life can I expect?

9. Can I have children?

10. What about sport and exercise?

11. Are there any long-term side effects from my medication?

12 Why is it called Addison's disease?

The leaflet is © ADSHG March 2006. It may be copied for personal use or by medical practitioners for the education of their patients. Otherwise it should not be reproduced without written permission of the ADSHG.
